Okay so I finally caved and ordered one of those Custom One Piece Anime Tie-Dye T-Shirts, this was after my third Comic Market run where my Hinata wig ate half my neck and my Kenma hoodie smelled like a train station, not sponsored by the way, I just have opinions and a drying rack full of regret and a bunch of shirts I keep meaning to deal with. Mine was the Luffy gear-five-ish skull print on a heavyweight black cotton blank, $34.20 shipped, size M, and the tie-dye is blue and purple which is already a risky move for me because Aoba Johsai blue-green once bled into a hotel towel in the sink at 2 a.m. and I spent twenty minutes convincing the front desk that no, I did not murder a Smurf, the towel never recovered, neither did my dignity, I still think about that towel. Shipping took eleven days to my place near Ikebukuro, no customs drama, which matters when you’re packing for Comiket at midnight and realize your only clean shirt is a joke from 2021, I mean that is a very specific kind of panic.
What I actually like, the print sits under the collar and across the left chest, water-based screen print, not that glossy vinyl that turns into a white glare block in every flash photo, I had that happen at a campus con last spring, my Zoro shirt looked like it had a tiny window taped to the chest in every shot, every single one, and the photographer was nice about it which somehow made it worse, you know what I mean. This one has a matte finish so no lightbulb crime scene, the print area is like 8 by 10 inches, chest only, not a giant all-over thing that makes you look like a walking towel, I have enough problems. The blank is thick enough that safety pins don’t chew through it when I’m clipping a wig cap or a prop strap, I wore it under a half-unbuttoned uniform jacket for a quick post-Comic Market meetup and the collar didn’t turn into a wet noodle by hour three, underarm seam held up through train stairs, stairs again, and me crouching to pick up a dropped Chopper keychain, tiny wins I will take them.
Fit runs a little boxy through the waist, so I tucked the front into high-waisted shorts for a lazy Chopper casual fit and it didn’t balloon weirdly, I also ordered a second one for a friend, same $34.20, and the back shoulder print sits about four inches below the seam so it doesn’t get crushed under a backpack strap, wait no, actually scratch that, I think I got the exact measurement right from the listing, about four inches below the seam, yes.
Tie-dye is chaos with a marketing budget, I love it, but it’s basically a stain that got famous, if you order a custom one check the sleeve hem and the back shoulder area because that’s where my first wash put a weird pale streak, not a dealbreaker, I fixed it with a cold rinse, inside-out, and a black fabric marker on the one white spot near the seam, looks intentional now, probably, no one’s stared at my ribcage long enough to file a complaint. Specific fix I actually trust, cold wash inside-out, hang dry, and if the collar gets floppy iron the ribbing on low with a cloth over it, do not iron the print directly, I learned that on a cheap Luffy shirt in 2022 and turned a tiny bubble into a sad little shiny scar, also double-sided tape on the inside of the collar helps keep the shirt from sliding under a wig tape strip, coser stuff, not glamorous.
One small tangent, why do con hotel sinks have towels that act like litmus paper, I get it, dye happens, but the Aoba Johsai blue-green situation should’ve come with a warning label and maybe a tiny fire extinguisher. Oh right, and my phone battery always dies at the worst time now, I was trying to pull up my train card at the station and the screen went black while everyone behind me sighed, I hate that so much, why is my phone like this, I wasn’t even doing anything and it just gave up. But yeah, back to the shirts.
Unpopular opinion, I don’t want a buttery-soft poly sublimation tee for an actual con day, I know people love that smooth vintage feel, but give me a heavier black cotton blank with a matte screen print every time, it survives sweat, deodorant, safety pins, and the moment I drop a prop on myself in a crowded hallway, white tees, no, white tee in August at a con is just a sweat confession with sleeves, I said what I said. The One Piece tie-dye one is now in rotation for casual days, not just cosplay-adjacent stuff, I wore it to a local con under an open flannel with the Kenma wig half off because I was done pretending my bangs were cooperating, someone asked if it was official merch, I said no it’s custom, and then immediately had to explain the difference between dye pattern and print because I’m me, the print didn’t crack after that wash, the sleeve hem stayed put, and the tie-dye still looks like a controlled accident, that’s all I need. There’s still a faint smell of the black fabric marker near the left seam and I can’t decide if I care.
