Okay so my ideal con tee is not some soft drop-ship dream, I need a blank that survives Comiket, local cons, campus con, and the hotel-sink dye incident. Right now I’m using Gildan 5000 Heavy Cotton blanks, about ¥1,800ish for two on sale, and getting thick black underbase screen prints from a tiny shop near Ikebukuro, not polyester sublimation, never again, I want the print to sit on top and not fade into the weave after three washes.
The shirt I actually wore to Winter Comiket had Hinata’s orange crow on the chest, about 18 cm wide, and a tiny “飛べ” on the left sleeve. Print cost me ¥3,200 for one-off screen setup plus ¥1,200 per shirt. Worth it? Mostly. The black underbase keeps the orange from going muddy and the cotton grabs double-sided tape around the collar when I’m fixing a neckline five minutes before a group shot. The shop took three weeks and ignored two DMs which is annoying but the print survived. The shoulder seam split while I was hauling a wig bag and a prop sword through the east hall, I fixed it with two safety pins and a scrap of black cotton from my wig kit. Wait, no, I mean the Gildan blanks were about ¥1,800 for two on sale, not each, I always mix that up.
Dye is where I’m stubborn. Me, I’d rather dye a heavyweight cotton blank in a bucket then touch heat-transfer vinyl that flashes white in every con photo. I did a test Aoba Johsai teal at a hotel sink, the towel turned mint green and my hands were highlighter colored, I don’t even know why I thought hotel sink was a good idea. Lesson learned, dedicated bucket, gloves, and rinse until the water runs clear. Also that glossy vinyl patch I tried once turned into a glowing white rectangle across my chest in flash photos, never again.
Oh right, also the con bathroom ran out of toilet paper by noon and my phone battery died while I was trying to check the group chat, which is its own stupid disaster, But yeah, back to the shirts.
Counter-mainstream opinion, white tees are not the default con uniform. At a packed campus con, my white test shirt got sweat rings under the arms and a gray smear from a stair rail before noon. Black heavyweight cotton hides the chaos and makes the print pop. Maybe that’s too practical for a fashion take, fine, I’m the person with safety pins in one pocket and a spare dye bucket in the other. The shirt just needs to survive the day and not ruin the photos. The black cotton scrap from my wig kit is still in my bag and the safety pins are in one pocket and the spare dye bucket is in the other.
