Matte Black Screen-Printed Tees Are Real Cosplay Con Gear

Night Comiket hallway, sweaty cosplayer in heavy black tee with small matte Karasuno crow on left chest and Nekoma cat back yoke, hauling wig box and props through humid crowd, con bag with safet

okay so I’ve been doing Comiket and local cons and campus events as Hinata and Kenma for a while now and my con bag is basically safety pins, double-sided tape, and regret, that’s it, that’s the bag. The tees I actually trust are heavy black blanks with a thick black-base silk screen, right now a United Athle 5001-01, about ¥1,600, plus ¥2,000 screen setup at a local Shinjuku print shop for a two-color front hit, left chest gets the small Karasuno crow, back yoke gets the Nekoma cat, matte ink only, no glossy transfer, I don’t want to hear about glossy transfer again. Wait, no, I think I got that wrong, I always mix up the blank price and the setup fee, the blank is about ¥1,600 and the setup is ¥2,000, the screen setup is the print shop part, not the shirt, anyway. The last print I ordered was for the campus con and it survived me hauling a wig box, two props, and a bottle of setting spray through a sauna hallway, my underarm seam popped anyway, I safety-pinned it inside the sleeve and kept moving, double-sided tape on the collar because I’m not relacing a wig mid-queue, that’s the real test, not some studio flat-lay, if a shirt can’t handle Comiket sweat and a camera flash it’s cosplay decoration, not gear.

So yeah.

Which is why I’m kind of against white tees for con use, unpopular take, don’t care, one summer Comiket under a Hinata wig and a white shirt turns into a sweat map and no amount of “breathable” copy fixes that. Also everyone keeps pushing polyester sublimation because the colors pop, sure, then the print goes shiny and my Seijoh teal dye job in a hotel sink turned a white towel into a crime scene, I still see that towel in my nightmares, thick black-base screen print doesn’t do that. And speaking of the sauna hallway, the heat at these events is stupid, you walk in already sweating, your wig cap is cooking, your props get slippery, and people keep acting like it’s fine, I don’t even know why, it’s not fine. But yeah, back to the shirts.

Specific disaster from the glossy transfer era, night photos at Comiket had this white reflective slab across my chest where the print caught the flash, looked like a dead pixel in every shot, matte screen print fixed it. I also keep a black fabric marker for edge scuffs and a tiny sewing kit for the sleeve seam that loves to betray me. The shirt is not merch to me, it’s the thing between my cosplay and a very public wardrobe failure. If you see me at Comiket with a teal-stained towel, no you didn’t, and also I need to buy more safety pins because the little tin in my bag is almost empty and the sewing kit is missing one needle.
