ok so my con bag is basically safety pins, double-sided tape, and regret, I cos Hinata and Kenma so I’m already carrying wigs, touch-up kit, props, camera, return-photo stress, and the shirt is the one thing I do not want to baby. Comic Market Day 2 at Big Sight, I wore a white tee with a Karasuno #10 print and by noon the armpits and collar looked like a crime scene. Never again. White is not the safe default. Unpopular maybe but for con tees a thick black blank beats canon accurate color every time unless you enjoy sweat halos in every group shot.

My current blank is a Printstar 5.6 oz black cotton crew, around ¥1,300, two-color screen print at a local shop for about ¥2,600 each on a 12-shirt run. Thick ink, matte finish, no plastic sheet feeling. I specifically ask for screen print on heavy black cotton, not polyester sublimation. Some people love sublimation because it does full-color gradients, fine. But glossy heat-transfer/glue prints reflect under con lighting. I have a campus con photo where my chest print turned into a white rectangular glare block. Looked like a censor bar for anime. Fixed it by reprinting matte and hitting a cracked edge near the shoulder seam with black fabric marker. Not perfect. Better than glowing. Actually scratch that, I don’t mean the marker fixed the whole print, it was just the cracked edge near the shoulder seam, the reprint was matte, that’s all I’m saying.

Specific disaster, I was dyeing an Aoba Johsai teal/green shirt in a hotel sink, rinsed it badly, set it down on a white hotel towel, and yeah. Towel looked like Seijoh had bled out. Paid the hotel ¥800 for the towel, still think about it. Now I dye in a bucket or not at all. Also con bathrooms running out of toilet paper is dumb, phone battery dying at the worst time is dumb, weather being too hot is dumb, I don’t even know why I’m mentioning it. But yeah, back to the shirts.

Repairs? At a local con my collar seam opened right before photos. Safety pin through the inside fold, double-sided tape on the collar point, done. Armpit seam on the same shirt? Tape, then later stitched with black thread while watching a Haikyuu episode. Side note, wig caps and black thread look identical in a dim hotel room. Don’t ask.

Anyway though.

I’d rather spend on a blank that survives sweat and a matte print that survives flash than chase a perfect gradient that turns into glare. Comic Market day 2 is not a fashion show, it’s a humidity trial. My black tee has survived three cons and one very bad hotel sink. The white one is now a rag.
