Photorealistic candid con scene: 5'4" cosplayer wearing heavyweight black cotton unisex T-shirt, black-to-teal spiral tie-dye, flat centered Fairy Tail guild mark chest screen print showing cotto

ok so I finally caved and ordered one of those Custom Fairy Tail Anime Print & Tie-Dye T-Shirts after a friend posted a con dump and the guild mark didn’t look like a shiny sticker for once, that’s why I caved honestly. Mine was $36 shipped for a thick black cotton blank, plus $7 for the Happy print on the left sleeve and $4 for a tiny Fairy Tail mark at the back neck, wait, no, I think I got that backwards in my head, the $36 was shipped for the blank itself, then $7 sleeve and $4 back neck, total $47 before tax, not after. That’s more than I usually spend on a con shirt but I have been burned, and I cosplay Hinata from Karasuno and Kenma from Nekoma so I’m already carrying wigs, touch-up makeup, a prop bag, and a phone full of terrible group shots, a tee has to survive the day or get out of my bag.

This one showed up with a black-to-teal spiral and a chest print that sits flat, water-based screen print, not that glossy transfer junk. You can see the cotton weave through the ink a little. That’s good. The last glossy Natsu flame print I got reflected every camera flash into a white block, in photos it looked like I had a tiny light box taped to my chest, never again.

The tie-dye part is fine but it’s not super even, the right armpit is lighter than the left, which I actually like because it looks less like a mall kiosk shirt. The blank is heavy enough that it doesn’t go see-through when I sweat through the third hall of Comic Market. I wore it to a campus con in a gym with zero AC, ran from the East Hall to the rooftop for a Haikyuu meetup, then sat through a three-hour Fairy Tail group shoot. The print didn’t crack, the sleeve Happy didn’t peel, and the collar didn’t turn into a wavy noodle immediately.

Small tangent, I’m picky about teal because I did the hotel-sink Aoba Johsai dye thing and stained a white towel so badly the front desk guy looked at me like I’d summoned a demon. So when I say the tie-dye on this shirt is okay, I mean it didn’t bleed into the white parts after one cold wash. I still washed it alone like a coward, the towel survived this time. Growth, I guess.

And real quick, why do con bathrooms always run out of paper by noon, every gym con has that one bathroom where the dispenser is empty and the floor is sticky and you stand in line behind someone in full armor, pack tissues people, it makes no sense. But yeah, back to the shirts.

The one thing I hate is the fit. It’s a unisex straight cut and the shoulder seam sits right at the edge of my shoulder, so when I lift my arms for a pose the whole shirt climbs. I fixed it inside with two safety pins at the armpit seam, same emergency kit I use for wig clips and popped seams. The collar also started curling after the second wash, I hit it with double-sided tape for the next shoot and it held for six hours, then I tacked it down with a needle and thread. Not pretty. Invisible in the group shot, which is all I need.

Here’s my anti-mainstream take, white tees are not the safe con choice. Everyone acts like a white blank is the default for anime prints, but a white shirt at a summer con is a sweat map with a character on it. I’d rather have a black or tie-dye base and let the print do the work. Also polyester sublimation can stay in the bin, I know it’s cheap and the colors pop, but I have seen too many con photos where the print turns into a shiny decal. Thick black cotton screen print, or I’m out.

Complaint time, the website sizing chart was vague and the shirt shrank maybe half an inch in length after the first dry-on-low. Not catastrophic but I’m 5’4” and I don’t need a tee turning into a crop top mid-panel. If I order another one I’m sizing up and washing cold only. The $7 sleeve print is worth it though, it’s a small Happy outline, not a huge back print, so it doesn’t fight the guild mark. I hate when a shirt has three giant prints and you can’t tell where to look.

Would I wear this to Comic Market again? Yeah. Probably under a hoodie for early queue, then alone for the afternoon. The Fairy Tail mark on the chest is centered properly, the back-neck hit doesn’t itch, and the tie-dye hides the sweat lines under my wig cape. The collar is still slightly annoying. I have safety pins and double-sided tape, that’s basically my whole con kit anyway.

Right now the safety pins are in the front pocket of my bag next to a wig clip, a loose mint, and a receipt I keep forgetting to throw out.
